Manchester United will face Chelsea in the 2010 Community Shield on 8th August 2010 at the Wembley Stadium in London

Defending 2009-10 Premier League champions and FA Cup winners Chelsea, will meet 2009-10 league runners-up Manchester United in the 2010 Community Shield. Usually the Community Shield is played between FA Cup winners and the Barclays Premier League champions, but since Chelsea won them both, the opponents would be the runners up of the Premier League i.e. Manchester United.

Manchester United has won the Community Shield a record 17 times, followed by Liverpool with 15 titles. Chelsea on the other hand has won the competition four times.

Chelsea Vs Manchester United Community Shield Head To Head Record:

1997 Community Shield / Charity Shield: Manchester United Winners
Referee: Peter Jones

The first time Chelsea and Manchester United met was in 1997 when Ruud Gullit was the manager of Chelsea and Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge of the Red Devils. Peter Jones was the referee and the attendance was a massive 73,636.

After a goalless first half, current Fulham manager Mark Hughes opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 52nd minute, but Norwegian International Ronny Johnsen equalized six minutes later.

This fixture had to go into extra time and then to the dreaded penalty shootout.

Manchester United never missed a single penalty as Paul Scholes, Dennis Irwin and Roy Keane scored from the spot, but when Frank Sinclair and Roberto Di Matteo missed from the spot for Chelsea, Nicky Butt scored to lift the 1997 Community Shield.

This was the first time Captain Roy Keane lifted the Community Shield for Manchester United.

Referee: Mike Riley

Three years after been defeated by Manchester United, Chelsea were all set to gain revenge over their rivals. Manchester United had the inform David Beckham in their starting lineup and where as Chelsea were managed by Italian Gianluca Vialli.

Former Leeds United player, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, giving Chelsea an import 1-0 lead at the break. But when Captain Roy Keane was shown a straight red in the 62nd minute, Mario Melchiot took advantage of the extra man to give Chelsea their first victory over rivals Manchester United.

2007 Community Shield / Charity Shield: Manchester United Winners
Referee: Mark Halsey

The head to head of Manchester United and Chelsea was 1-1 before the fixture started and ironically the scores remained 1-1 after full time with goals scored by Florent Malouda (45) and Ryan Giggs (35).

Chelsea manager José Mourinho was looking to win his second Community Shield, the first being in 2005 when Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-1, with Didier Drogba scoring two goals for the Blues.

This match had to be decided on a penalty shoot-out for the second time. Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun and Wright-Phillips all missed their respective penalties.  Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick had no difficulties with their penalties and when Wayne Rooney dispatched the penalty to perfection, Manchester United lifted the Community Shield trophy for the 16th time in their club history.

2009 Community Shield / Charity Shield: Chelsea Winners
Referee: Chris Foy

After the departures of José Mourinho, Avram Grant, and Luiz Felipe Scolari, Chelsea signed Carlo Ancelotti from AC Milan as their new manager. In this very high tensed fixture, it was very important to take the lead and Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha a.k.a Nani opened the scoring with just 10 minutes on the clock.

In the 52nd minute, Ricardo Carvalho equalized for Chelsea and Frank Lampard gave the Blues the lead in the 70th minute. Chelsea were on their way to clinch the Shield for the  fourth time but a 92nd minute injury goal by Wayne Rooney kept Manchester United in the hunt.

This fixture between Manchester United and Chelsea had to go through a penalty shootout yet again.

Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou scored from the penalty spot but when Patrice Evra missed his penalty, Chelsea were crowned Champions for the fourth time.

2010 Community Shield / Charity Shield:
Referee: Andre Marriner

So far Chelsea and Manchester United have met four times in the Community Shield. The trend so far was Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester United, Chelsea and if the trend continous then Manchester United will be crowned champions.

Howard Webb was first proposed to referee this fixture but Andre Marriner got the nod ahead of Webb and thank god for that.

This curtain raiser will be a perfect start for the 2010-11 season. But the questions arises will Manchester United win the Community Shield for the 18th time or will Chelsea win this for the fifth time and make it 3-2 on heads to heads against Manchester United.
